Official: VW pulls voice commands from RNS510 Navigation on 2012 Passat

by Jay Pichardo · 12 comments

VW has issued a bulletin confirming that it has pulled the option to have voice commands to operate the RNS510 radio. Poor performance and sluggish operation are the blame for the decision. VW hopes that the introduction of Sirus travel link will make up for it.

The change has already been listed as rolling change on the 2012 Passat and does not affect bluettoh related voice commands.

UPDATE:  VW issues firmware update for Passats already shipped with Voice commands

Any way to re-enable this after the fact?

Damn, and I had just asked my dealer about this in preparation for my first service call. And, every time I've tried to use Sirius Travel Link, it says it's not available. :-(

I believe if you call Sirius and ask them to activate Travel Link they will. They know about the RNS 510 coming on line with Travel Link.

So Jay, does this mean that if we go to VW and request this update to allow for Sirius Travel Link, they will now perform the firmware update? Or do I need to complain about the poor performance first to get them to do this upgrade? Thanks.

I am not sure how the process will go.

VW just needs to ditch the RNS510….

A system that uses a HDD in 2012?? That is why it is sluggish, and VW's answer is to disable features to speed it up.. Just use the guts from the RNS315, with the bigger screen of the RNS510.. Problem solved..

I just called VW Customer Support line and asked them about this bulletin and the whole subject of getting SiriusXM Travel Link for earlier 2012 adaptors who don't have it. I beginning to think this is either a BIG SECRET or a TABOO subject at VW because I cannot get any answers other than Hmmm, Uhhhh, gee We don't have anything in our computer databases about this. Please VW give me a break. My next step may be to go to the President of VW and see what he says.

If anyone has a RNS510 with Sirius Travel Link and no Nav voice commands except bluetooth and wants a radio with full nav voice command and doesn't care about having Travel Link, then please email me at bwcw@mac.com and perhaps we can swap radios. Thank you.

Just got my car back from the 90 day check today and told them about my performance issues and the sluggish performance of the radio when changing screens pressing buttons etc. They told me it was operating according to factory specs and no updates. They also said VW may now about the problem but hasn't released any updates. Guess I will have to wait further. Has anyone any ideas how to break this impasse?

fantastic!!! the voice commands were crap anyways in the RNS-510. Hardly worked and super slow!! sounds like they finally realized if the feature isn't working and cant be fixed it should just go away. looking forward to travel link!

I can verify that on my 2012 Tiguan SEL that I just picked up a few days ago, the NAV voice commands are disabled and the Sirius Travellink is enabled.
